At The Lea, we understand that for our curriculum to be successfully implemented and for children to achieve to their highest potential, the foundations of learning have to be secure. These foundations we consider to be the “basic skills” that lead to successful learning.
There is a huge focus on these skills in Early Years and Key Stage one so that children can successfully access wider learning. These are detailed up until year 4 below at which point the basic skills expectations have reached their ceiling.
Reading
Nursery:
– Using correct format for holding a book, turning pages and recognises reading text from left to right
– To understand phase 1 & 2 phonic sounds
– Recognise own name
Reception:
– To know all phase 3 phonics sounds
– To read CVC words
Year 1
– To know all phase 5 phonics sounds
– To read the first 100 HFW
Year 2:
– To know all phonics sounds but not the suffixes
– To read all 300 HFW
Year 3:
– To have a secure understanding of all phonics sounds and blends
– To read all of the HFW accurately
Year 4:
– To have a secure understanding of all phonics sounds and use these to blend
– To read all of the 300 HFW accurately
Writing
Nursery:
– To give meaning to marks
– To begin to use an effective pencil grip
– To form some letter shapes accurately
Reception:
– To be able to write all letters correctly in their name
– Uses an effective pencil grip
– To use phase 2 and 3 phonics in writing
Year1:
– Form letters correctly
– Make sure letters sit on the line
– Use finger spaces between words
– Spell 60 of first 100 HFW
Year 2:
– Use capital letters and full stops
– Use finger spaces between words
– Spell the first 100 HFW correctly
Year 3:
– Spelling all HFW (300)
– Using capital letters and full stops accurately and consistently
– Being able to form all letters correctly
Year 4:
– Spelling all HFW and all spellings from y3 spelling list
– Using capital letters and full stops accurately and consistently
– Being able to form all letters correctly
Maths
Nursery:
– To subitise to 5
– Counting using 1:1 correspondence
Reception:
– To subitise to 5
– Forming digits accurately 0-9
– Counting using 1:1 correspondence to 10
Year 1:
– To be able to count forwards from 0 – 100
– To recall part-part whole facts with numbers within 10
Year 2:
– To be able to count forwards in 2s, 5s and 10s and related multiplication facts
– Recall all addition and subtraction facts with number bonds within 10
– Recognise PV to 2 digits
Year 3:
– Recall and understand multiplication facts for the 2, 5, 3, 4, 8 and 10 times tables
– Recall all addition and subtraction facts with number bonds within 20
– Recognise PV to 3 digits
Year 4:
– Recall all multiplication and division facts for times tables to 12 x 12
– Recall all addition and subtraction facts with number bonds within 20
– Recognise PV to 4 digits
